Quote of the week:
“I took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart. I am, I am, I am.” – Sylvia Plath “The Bell Jar”
First post, best post
Hi everyone! Welcome to Lezzie Literature. This first post is to introduce you to the concept of this website. I, like a lot of other queer people, grew up in a conservative town where you read “The Great Gadsby” and called it a day. There wasn’t much talk around being well-read or reacting to a character in a novel. I would see the people who talked about liking books getting their heads slammed into lockers with those books they loved. Public school in the midwest was exactly like what you see in the movies: disturbing and soulless. I was a weird nuerodivergent kid, who tried so hard to fit in, that they left parts of themselves behind that should’ve been loved and nurtured. One of those parts was my love for the artistry of reading, writing, poetry and classic literature.
Now I’m a 20-something out-of-the-closet adult living in a big and dreary city, trying to heal and connect with my inner angsty teenager. A few months ago I started to really read again and it ignited something in me that felt so familiar – yearning that had nothing to do with the outside world. And boy, do I love to yearn and forget I exist. I finally finished Sylvia Plath’s “The Bell Jar” and proceeded to freak out. It changed my life. Why did no one tell me about this book? Are there more like this? But it seemed all I had were the people of Reddit (great people) to type relentlessly to about my love for the fig tree allegory and being queer while reading classic, accidentally(?) homo-erotic novels. I decided today that I was going to put all my thoughts and stupid, obsessive theories into one place, Lezzie Literature!
To be clear this page will not only be for “lesbian” literature, but other works of art as well. As soon as I find out how to let people submit recommendations, I will really want someone to point me in the direction of my next fixes (if anyone sees this). My main interests right now are Sylvia Plath, Emily Dickinson, Audre Lorde etc. And I’ll try to write without spoilers … maybe. Anyways, hi! Welcome!
